Who's Driving Your Car?
Remember when the song Jesus Take the Wheel first came out? That song resonated with a lot of people. Not only was it a catchy tune that was well song, but the lyrics were absolutely right on point! You know you started to sing it in your head right now. Nice!

You know how it only works to have one person drive your car? It’s no fun to be in the driver’s seat and have someone else grab the wheel out of fear or anxiety? That's always a BAD thing! This type of action causes accidents. The same is the case when it comes to driving your life. Either you have to drive or you have to let God drive. If you want to drive, he's not the type who’s going to reach over and grab the wheel. Even in the midst of an obvious impending accident. You have to put HIM in the driver’s seat and leave the wheel alone. That's the only way to experience the fullness of all He has promised you in The Bible.

I see many people who say they want Jesus to drive, but keep graving the wheel from His hand when they are afraid or anxious. I have seen many others who want to stay put in the drivers seat and ask Him to take control when the conditions get a little tough or bumpy. Either way, it’s not going to work!

So, sing it with me… “Jesus, take the wheel. Take it from my hand. Cause I can’t do this on my own. I’m letting go! So give me one more chance. Save me from this road I’m on. Jesus, take the wheel.”

No Excuses and No Explanations
My oldest son, Trey is at that age where he is starting to question everything that mom and dad says. Well, he’s especially questioning mom and starting to get a little edgy in his tone with her. I think he’s a little more afraid that I will put my foot up his rump if he responds to me in such ways. But, he’s such a smart kid. I mean, he gets wonderful grades. And for the past 3 years he has been on the Straight-A Honor Roll and has been received the top student award in his class. He’s a sharp little jabroni! But, unfortunately, because of his self-perceived intelligence, he is starting to develop an unteachable attitude.

He doesn’t realize that although he is a sharp kid for his age, he is still only 8 years old. Ang and I are trying to teach him that “he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know.” We are graciously trying to teach him that although he knows a lot, he doesn’t know everything. We want him to learn that even though he does his best, sometimes that isn’t good enough. And we want him to learn that even though we demand him to do his best; we realize that he is bound to mess up from time to time. This is where I want him to learn to accept responsibility for his mistakes, learn from them and grow so that he doesn’t repeat the same mistakes again. And the best learning happens with the philosophy in place of: No Excuses and No Explanations.

As a pastor, I am in the people developing business. I have interns that I work with, college students and even young professionals. These people are learning to do things and most of them hold high standards of quality and excellence. But, they make mistakes. I don’t mind when people make mistakes – this is a part of learning. But, when mistakes are made I want No Excuses and No Explanations. I want them to learn from their mistakes and move on.

I have found that some people are better at making excuses and giving explanations than they are at learning and improving. This is a bad thing! Don’t be this type of person. Make sure that you always try hard and give your best effort. But, realize that you are not perfect and you are going to make a few mistakes along the way. Definitely be the person who strives for excellence! However, when you do make mistakes, be the kind of person who is willing to learn from the mistakes you made and move forward.

Don’t fall into the trap of blaming other things or people for your failures. Avoid making excuses of why you didn’t gitter’ done! And definitely don’t allow yourself to get good at explaining why you dropped the ball. These are paths you don’t want to go down.

No Excuses and No Explanations. This philosophy is what Ang and I teach Trey and the rest of our boys and it’s the advice I offer to you now.

Fight or Die
This sounds like a line that could have been delivered in the movie, Braveheart. I can see William Wallace standing in front of the troops, yelling; “they will never take away our freedom, we will either Fight or Die”. It seems so patriotic and noble. Heroes are made from those who have fought and managed to not die. Fight or Die! It’s more than a movie line.

I think it should be the motor for Christians. Fight or Die! Fight against the enemy and his schemes at all times, or you will die! Make no bones about it, the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy us. (John 10:10) He wants you DEAD! His goal is to kill your spirit and then physically kill you. His goal is for you to die and end up where he will spend eternity. Are you aware of this? The way I see it, you have two choices – either FIGHT OR DIE!

The good news is that God offers you His protection. We know that He is greater and more powerful than satan. He also offers us the assurance of living forever with Him in paradise. But, we have to fight! We have to join in the war and defend ourselves, our Christian brothers and sisters and defend the honor of our King. It’s not going to be a walk in the park, but we are guaranteed success.

Even more, God gives us all the tools we will need to defend ourselves against any weapon the enemy will throw at us. He gives us his full armor; helmet of salvation, shield of faith, breastplate of righteousness, belt of truth, shoes fitted with the gospel of peace and of course our weapon - the sword of the Spirit – which is the Word of God. (Ephesians 6:12-14) We have all we need to defend ourselves and then we have a weapon to use to slay the enemy with – God’s Word.

Sadly, too many of us are unwilling to pick up our sword and fight. We believe we are too busy to learn to use our sword, too civilized to carry our sword and too scared to pull it out and use it, especially in public. Too many Christian soldiers die because they don’t recognize they are in a war. They fail to realize that the only way to defeat the enemy is to become prolific in using their weapon, the Sword of the Spirit, God’s Word.

Many people hold to flawed beliefs and think that satan won’t strike an unarmed person. They think he is a gentleman and observes civilized rules of engagement when it comes to military conflict. How wrong they are!! Truth is these are his favorite kind of targets - people who are unwilling to pick up their sword and fight. These people are quick and easy to kill.

I beg of you to not be this person! You have to realize we are in a war and the battle never ends. The stakes are high and the consequences are eternal. God never promised us a seat on the sidelines so we can observe the fight. He wants us to be in the middle of the battle holding fast to the mantra and belief that we either - “Fight or Die”!

Can you dig it?!
