On The Fence
When I was younger my family lived right next to an industrial junk yard. To keep my friends and me in our neighborhood, or should I say - out of the industrial junk yard - there was an 8 foot high chain length fence. This fence was supposed to deter us from entering the junk yard. I’m sure it was placed there to keep us safe from the dangers of playing around or climbing on the old equipment. But, there were a few problems:
1. Everyone knows that young boys like to climb fences. 2. We were young boys with a lot of free time on our hands. 3. We could see through the fence (and therefore enticed to enter and play). 4. That abandoned equipment looked like a ghetto gymnastics gym to us young boys from the projects.
I remember the first time my friends talked me into throwing caution to the wind and climbing the fence. We wanted to play hide and seek. After a little deliberation we decided to go for it! Tony was the first over, he was 2 years older than me and often led me into trouble, so this time was no different. Next went Anthony and then his younger brother Marcus – they would follow Tony anywhere, even off that proverbial bridge if he so led. The only 2 left were Carmen and me. I knew Carmen wasn’t going over next, he was always last. He was often the voice of reason that went unheeded. He was usually the last to jump in and the first to say, “I told you so” when something went wrong. After seeing how easy the other boys got over, I began my climb to the top of the fence. Now, I don’t why or how but once I got to the top and I was straddling the fence, fear set in and I froze up. I sat there not moving for what seemed like days. I could hear the 3 other boys on one side goading me to climb down as I sat there afraid. On the other side, I saw Carmen turn and run away yelling “I told you soooo”! I began to scream: “go get my mom”, “I’m scared, “HELP”! My friends invoked the Code of the Pirates - He who falls behind gets left behind; and they ran into the junk yard leaving me all alone. I sat up there on the fence scared to move. I was afraid! Afraid to stay there for fear that I would fall. Afraid to come down on the side of the junk yard for fear I would get hurt playing around in the restricted area. And afraid to climb down and go home because I knew my mom had to have known by now. Fear kept me in an uncomfortable and unstable place – at the top of the fence! And so it is with many of us. We climbed up on that fence when we were younger and fear has kept us up there ever since. We are afraid to move, afraid of falling, afraid to join the crowd in the restricted area. We are also afraid of not having any fun and living a boring life on the safe side of the fence. And so we stay at the top of the fence. We straddle it, hang on for dear life, go for the ride, but we are too afraid to move. God warns us about this too. In Revelation 3:16, God tells us to either be hot or cold, because if we are lukewarm, he’s going to spit us out. In other words, make a choice. Come down on one side or the other. But if you just stay on the fence, he’s going to make the choice for you. He will spit you out! You will hear Him say turn away from me. You are just as bad as those who are playing around in the restricted area – but at least they get to have a little fun before they get in trouble. So, come down off the fence. It’s no place to live! I would love for you to come down on the safe side that offers you forgiveness and grace through the blood of Christ. On this side is where you can find eternal life. But, if you don’t choose this, then foolishly choose the other side and go and live it up. But you need to understand, you can’t stay on top of the fence forever. To NOT choose is a choice. You are choosing God’s judgment. There are no exemptions and time is running out for you to make a wise choice. The only side that leads to eternal life is coming down on God’s side!
