It's Time to GrowMy family has recently expanded as we added another little boy to the quiver, Mason Anthony was born 3 months ago. He joins Trey who just turned 6 and Michael who is 3.5 years old. (3.5 mind you, he'll let you know if you forget the "and a half") Boy, they are a lot of fun! I would love to take the time to tell you story after story of how they make my wife and I laugh all the time. Michael is completely funny, he has a deep raspy voice and every word he speaks comes out loud! Trey is extremely funny as well. He's also very intelligent; he has a quick wit and loves to ask questions. I might say that he takes after me in this way. :-)
For some time now we have implemented a discipline with Trey that we will tell him things only one time and then we expect him to do it. This discipline came into play because Trey will ask over and over the old preverbal question that parents don't want to hear, "but why"? Most of the time, I don't mind explaining things to him, I have found my explanation is what helps him understand and usually speeds up the learning process. But sometimes, Trey doesn't understand what I'm saying. In these moments, it's still expected of him to obey what was told to him and to respond accordingly the first time he is told. When he chooses not to listen and learn, there are consequences that he will have to accept as a result of his disobedience. This usually means there is a spanking in his near future. (For those of you who are against spanking, sorry, I'm old school. As Will Smith said; "I will touch that butt when you cut out of line...") Besides, I got a lot of spankings growing up and I turned out fine. I might as well pass the tradition on. Holla'!
This reminds me of a situation God dealt with concerning His chosen people, the Israelites. They often chose to be disobedient and ignore what God was telling them. As a result they were punished - a lot, and sometimes severely. Notice His words to his people in Isaiah 28:9: "The Lord is trying to teach the people a lesson; He is trying to make them understand His teachings. But the people are like babies too old for breast milk, like those who no longer nurse at their mother's breast."
Sadly, this scripture still applies to you and me as Gods' chosen people, even years later. God loves us, He thinks we are funny and we bring smiles to His face. He has wonderful stories that He longs to tell the angels about how talented and sharp we are. He is there for us watching us grow and mature. But, like all parents, He sometimes has issues with us being disobedient. He desires for us to do everything He tells us to do and this is outlined in His word. Unlike the rules for my son Trey, fortunately for us, God doesn't implement the "I'm only going to tell you one time rule". If he did, many of us would be in big trouble. Don't sit around asking why and waiting for God to start handing out punishments before you start to do what He says. Bottom line is we need to show spiritual maturity and realize that it's time to grow.
