Free SamplesMy oldest son Trey and I took a trip to Sam's Club after one of his football games. The plan was to grab one of the ready to go pizzas they make in the food court. They are big and quite delicious and the best part about it is that they are very inexpensive. You can get an extra large 16 inch pizza for only $7.97, it's a great deal.
If you have ever frequented Sam's Club on a Saturday afternoon, you would know they have several products on display in which they offer all customers free samples. Free samples! You have to be kidding me. So, Trey and I grab a cart so we could fit in with the other shoppers and headed down the isles grabbing free samples left and right. It was unbelievable all the food they had to sample. We were able to enjoy, carrot cake, pork loin, little smokeys, chips and dip (4 kinds of salsa and cheese dip) pizza rolls, rice, smoked fish, cheese, and a lot more. I enjoyed my time at Sam's Club this day, but Trey loved it even more. He moved from display to display like a little kid rushing from ride to ride at Disney World. It was a sight to behold and definitely a lot of fun to be a part of!
I enjoyed my time bonding with my oldest son. It was my pleasure to teach him how to maneuver from free sample display to the next in a nonchalant way. They key is to pass by close enough so that the worker is the one to initiate the conversation and then attempts to stop you and offer you the free sample. You then respond with a surprised look on your face as if to say; "Why, I didn't even notice you or the 15 other people offering free samples on the corner of almost every isle in the store". It's an art that takes a lot of practice. However, Trey was not smooth at all, often running up to the display and taking 2 or 3 samples. We have to work on him.
Although it was a lot of fun and we received our fill of free samples for the day, there was one major problem. I was so busy enjoying the free samples that I didn't notice all the items starting to pile up in my cart. By the time it was over, my trip to Sam's Club to get an $8.00 pizza ended up costing me around $60. How did this happen?
It's easy, the free samples concept that Sam's Club and so many other stores use, really does work! Although we think we are getting something for free, it rarely works out that way. Once we start indulging in the free samples, it's often difficult to stop at the sample part and we usually end up wanting the whole thing.
The same is true in life. We often think we are getting a free sample and end up with the whole thing. Look at the man who started off by taking a quick drink at a party and ended up becoming an alcoholic? What about the girl who starts off kissing the boys because she thinks it's romantic and then ends up giving herself away, sexually, to several men before she is married? You could be the one who starts by admiring pictures of beautiful women on the internet and now it has grown into a full blown pornography addiction that you can't let go of.
Free Sample? Yeah, right! Perhaps the best thing to do is to avoid the sample all together and realize that not only is it NOT free, but it will cost you dearly. As for me, I won't be heading back to Sam's Club on a Saturday anytime soon.
