Would you lie to save a buck?
The other day I went miniature golfing with one of my friends. The place we went to was expensive. As a matter of fact... it was double the highest price I had ever paid to play miniature golf. The place offered a discount of one dollar for those under a certain age. After I stepped up and paid I noticed my friend telling the cashier that he qualified for the discount. This struck me odd because he didn't look anywhere near like the age to qualify for the discount, it struck me even more odd that she was about to give him the discount. As a good friend and mentor I did what anyone else in my position would have done, I called him out! In front of the cashier, our other friends and everyone else in line, I let it be known that he was well past the age of 12!

I couldn't believe he was willing to lie about his age to save a buck on putt-putt golf! I was pretty disappointed in him and took it upon myself to express this to him. I talked about the importance of telling the truth at all times and gave him my speech on integrity and doing the right thing, etc. Everything I told him was true and it was obvious he needed to be reminded of these things. When the conversation was over, I was still amazed that he lied, but even more amazed that he didn't think it was a big deal and admitted that he would probably do it again. All the time we were playing miniature golf, I kept thinking in my mind about how disappointed I was in him and how I would never do such a thing, and definitely not to save a buck!

On the drive home, the thought occurred to me that I'm really no better than my friend. I mean, I too have lied to save money in the past. My lies were not necessarily to save a buck, but I had lied to save money. I was dogging him and looking down on him for doing something that, truthfully I have done more than once. Although I would never lie to save a buck, I had lied to save a couple bucks, several hundred dollars and even a couple of thousand dollars. The truth be told, I'm no better than him and perhaps even a little worse. My lies weren't to save a buck, but to save much more money. My lies possibly cost some other honest person even more than this buck that I have a major problem with.

What about you? Have you ever lied to save a buck? Would you? Is it a big deal to say that you are a student at the movie to get the student discount? Have you ever misrepresented the truth to save money on your car insurance? Is it wrong to receive the employee discount from the store where your friend works? We all know the answers to these questions, but are we living them out in our daily lives or are we lying to ourselves, again?!
